March is National Women's History Month, a particular time of year when the immeasurable impact women have made throughout history is commemorated. It all began in New York City in 1908 when a demonstration and parade of women protested against women's unequal political and economic rights and the arbitrary legislation to which they were subjected. That day, thousands of women united and marched for better labor laws, conditions, and the right to vote. These great women made audacious and daring moves despite uncertainty. They did what has never been done; they reshaped the world in ways we could never imagine. They redefined history by creating a legacy.
Women have not been treated as equals for the bulk of human history, but today, Women's History Month is a reminder that equity and equality aren't one group's mission. It is humanity's challenge to acknowledge and solve because, as humans, we are all connected; and the story of one individual becomes all of our stories.
We celebrate every contribution women have made to history, culture, and society and applaud the outstanding achievements of all women today as they impact us all. We understand the critical link between knowing about historical women who have shaped our future and the women of today who are showing up to make a positive difference. It is essential to acknowledge the dignity and accomplishments of women in our own families and those from other backgrounds. In recognizing the achievements of women in all facets of life, we forge a significant impact on the development of self-respect and new opportunities for girls and young women alike. We draw strength and inspiration from those who came before us and the remarkable women working among us today.
We are part of the change that affects us all.
This year's national theme, "Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope," further nudges the world that these life-changing impacts aren't for women alone but bring health and hope to us all. We must celebrate the past while forging forward into the future.
